Memory Lane

One fine, spring day about 11 years ago, I had the following exchange with my beloved Baby Bird as she dressed for another day of First Grade:

MPM:  Bird?  Would you like to wear the pink pants and have your hair in a ponytail, or the orange pants and pig tails?

Bird:  Gah. (Yes, I think she invented this word) Gah.  [followed by a bunch of guttural noises and flailing about.] I don't want my hair brushed. (This was a daily request.)

MPM (laughing to herself and trying to diffuse the rage growing in her belly): Baby Bird!  What is wrong?  Do you need some Midol? (Men: never, ever try this technique.  It is only allowed between a mother and her elementary-aged daughter.)  You are a mess!

Bird (If memory serves: screaming):  NO! No pig tails; no pony tail; no hair brush. And I don't want your stupid doll.

MPM: ~~~

MPM: 0   The Bird: 1

Lesson?  Choose your battles.  It all works out.
Except for the Augie factor.
That's one we're still working on.
He wants to rent a powder blue tuxedo for an upcoming prom.
He already has a respectable one that I bought.
Should I let him do it?

Ahahaha! Powder blue?!

I vote yes! Then you'll have another picture of him you can put up next to that whoopie cushion!

Ack! Powder blue prom tux. Well there are worse things he could want to rent. I say yes sir. Oh and bird sounds a lot like my oldest daughter when she was little. Hated the brush to even come near her head. Or maybe that was me. I love the doll reference. Too funny.

You should have seen my 2 nephews senior prom. One in powder blue. One in red!! They were a sight!

Oh man, what a decision you all have to make. My grand daughter is already giving me attitude and she is only 18 months old. I told her daddy, he will have his hands full soon enough. But you are right...pick the battles. Some just aren't worth it. Powder blue? hummm....

Of course you should let him. He has his whole life to be respectable. Senior year is for fun! Go Augie!

My son wanted an orange one - ala "Dumb or Dumber."

Don't let him do it - it will be the one thing talked about at every high school reunion for the rest of his life.

I say YES! Let him....those make the BEST pic's!!! My boys have that same kind of taste...and I DO NOT understand it...

My oldest daughter I would fix like this on a daily basis...dress her cute in little dresses and fix her long hair into something cute and then we would walk to school and she said to me...."Mama...Why do you always make me look like Sunday?" I thought I was being a good mom and fixing her the best I knew how and she HATED IT...she didn't want to dress up and feel like everyday was like going to church for her I guess...being a Mom is just sooooo FUN!

Amazing how fashion repeats itself...hence the poweder blue tux. Will make for laughs down the road.

After I stop laughing at Midol/My doll, I'll say that powder blue for a tax is tres retro and would be cool.

This comes from someone who is wearing a pair of pants she bought for ninety eight cents--yes, .98--from Fashion Bug to work today, so take any fashion advice with a grain of salt.

My prom date wore a dusty rose tuxedo with a tapestry vest! My dress was robins egg blue. We made an interesting couple. And did I mention that my prom date is now openly gay! I think I did that to him :)

Only if he has a job and pays the rental himself. When did powder blue come back in fashion?

winetipper said...

Commenting ONLY because you've asked: please tell Augie that Wino votes no, no, no! The joke loses its charm the minute he sees his date's face! He has many opportunities in life to let his freak flag fly, but chances are good that the young lady's sense of humor will not extend to prom night dress. And now I'll shut up.

MPM did you ever have to take her to school in her PJs? Hair was not a problem here, just getting dressed!

I vote yes for the powder blue bt only if her gets the shirt with the powder blue ruffle. You know, if her wants to bring back the disco look of the late 70's......

so, excuse the typos. Some one got something yucky on my keyboard and the keys stick....Husband
.....geeze.

You even need to ask that question?? OF COURSE!!

Why not?? Make some memories!
I think he's handsome enough to make powder blue look good!

Driftwood and Pumpkin said...

Let him do it. And then have him work off the difference.

I am mean, aren't I?!?

shara said...

I would have him work off the cost doing stuff you sooo do not want to do and would enjoy watching him do and then, yes! on the powder blue tux- as long as it has HUGE lapels and a ruffled shirt to go w/ it... and is about an inch too short in the pants....

PICTURES! LOTS AND LOTS OF PICTURES!!!

It takes a very special man to wear powder blue, and I believe that Augie is that man. Just show us a picture afterward, k? (Does he take after his father, then?)

Unknown said...

Yes, let him rent the powder blue..it will be another weapon in his embarrassment album...but wait, I doubt that would ever embarrass a whoopi cushon!

Trisha said...

If you don't let him rent the poweder blue tux, what kind of pictures will you have to embarras him with when he has kids? I say - why not?

imom said...

Love the Bird story! I had so many hair battles with my daughter, still do, but now it's with hair color instead of brushing.

I say go for the blue tux... It will make for some great conversation over pictures later!

Had to read comments before I got the MYDOLL. Guess I was concentrating on Augie in blue. I think he'd be handsome in any color. What's his date wearing?

Bird looks adorable in BRAIDS. That's why.

Deb said...

Sweet memories...yes...sigh...life goes by so fast.
Let him get the tux. Afterall, you won't be able to live it down because in years to come, he will always remember that you didn't allow him to get the tux "he wanted" for his senior prom.

Daryl said...

Oh it will match his eyes .. YES ..

Country Girl said...

Absolutely.

You asked.

Unknown said...

I vote yes as long as we get photos!!

They both do seem to have a great sense of humor!!

Keetha said...

Heck yeah, let him. And post pictures.

I agree with winetipper -- make sure the date is on board first. And also, he DOES know it's funny, right? Because as long as he knows it's funny, party on, Dude! But if he doesn't see the humor and he sort of likes the powder blue, it may be time for an intervention.

Aw, who am I kidding, of COURSE he knows it's funny! He has a whoopie suit!

LOL at the Midol response. Too funny.

Powder blue? With a ruffled shirt like Tom Hanks in 'Big'?

The Midol reference is priceless!

Dude. YES.

I love those gems of yours. Seriously, that's just all sorts of funny.

Nancy said...

Yep. They always end up looking adorable.

When we were very young, my husband had to wear a powder blue tuxedo in a friend's wedding. Flaming red hair with powder blue and ruffles. So seventies. And they took the wedding photos in front of a funeral home because the landscaping was pretty. Yikes, I think my retinas are still burned from that sight.

Aww, let him rent it. You're only a senior once (hopefully).
xoxo,
Mary

With white ruffles...Oh gawd let him...it makes no sense, but let him, he's a good boy.

baronessvonb said...

Hah to the powder blue tuxedo! My oldest wanted to wear white patent shoes (!) with his tux (he obviously got his fashion sense from his father).

Once I talked him around to the whole "James Bond" look - white jacket, black pants - it was a go.

Praise be.

Magpie said...

Powder blue!?!? They still do that? People wore powder blue and brown and other godawful colors when I was in high school. Tell me it's tongue in cheek...
