This-n-That Thursday

This is our barbecue yesterday.
We only had 3 feet of snow on the ground.
It is also an example of my hipstamatic app.
I ♥ the hipstamatic app...
This is our barbecue this morning.
We have four and a half feet of recorded snow now.
This is what we are looking at for the near future:

Tuesday Text: Parentexting™

Some vicarious book-learning with my daughter...
And maybe a little football trash-talking as well.
But we are Giants fans, and we're allowed.
And this?
My babies sent me flowers for my birthday!
How cute is that?
They are growing up.
And the next day, I went right back to parenting--
My big boy had a man cold....

Nine Below

Aquarius - Jan. 24, 2011
A surprising phone call or e-mail could come your way today from a friend you haven't heard from in a long time, Aquarius. This should make you happy, as you've probably been wondering what this person was doing. Some business changes may have occurred for your friend, but possible new opportunities might also be in the cards for you. Hear what your friend has to say, think about it, and decide later.

As long as this friend is sending their private jet to take me to Bali, it's all good.

Happy Birthday to Me!

God Bless Andy Rooney:

“As I grow in age, I value women over 50 most of all. Here are just a few reasons why:

A woman over 50 will never wake you in the middle of the night and ask, 'What are you thinking?' She doesn't care what you think.

If a woman over 50 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do, and it's usually more interesting.

Women over 50 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you, if they think they can get away with it.

Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it's like to be unappreciated.

Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 50.

Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 50 is far sexier than her younger counterpart.

Older women are forthright and honest.. They'll tell you right off if you are a jerk or if you are acting like one. You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her.

Yes, we praise women over 50 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed, hot woman over 50, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year old waitress. Ladies, I apologize.

For all those men who say, 'Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?’ Here's an update for you. Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage
. Why? Because women realize it's not worth buying an entire pig just to get a little sausage!”

Any more?

Musings on the eve of my 51st birthday...
  • Water really is important.
  • So is vitamin D.
  • Spanx are not all that important.
  • I may never need to wear an overcoat again.
  • I am actually in my sixth decade of life.
  • When one lies awake at night, one can figure out things like decades lived.
  • In your sixth decade, you tend to lie awake at night.
  • You really don't have to stress over the small stuff.
  • You do, however, need to stand up for the big stuff.
  • Any free $$ should always be spent on travel.
  • "Giving your children roots and wings" is so life affirming.
  • It's all good.
Any more advice for me?

Unwavering

How technology allows Mama to have a vacation:

My babies went to the Bahamas with their father last week:
Above, we have The Bird--trying to relax.

Above, we have Augie--missing his Mama.
Above, we have Mama--somewhere in there.

Monday

I'll take it....

You Are Peaceful

You are a supportive and caring person. You pride yourself on being there for people.

You are a good listener. Friends and family know that they can pour their hearts out to you.

You are consistent and stable. You never change just for the sake of changing.

You believe in being both compassionate and forgiving. Second chances are important.

And I am taking some time to remember Dr. Martin Luther King's non violent activism today. Now more than ever.

Happy Friday

Apparently I'll be flinging birds at pigs all weekend...
What are your plans?

This-n-That Thursday

Dora takes over:
Yesterday, we had a snow day.
My mommy stayed home from work.
I was so happy to have her all day.
It was my job to exorcise exercise her.
I had to wait for her on the bridge.
She is so old and slow cautious.
Do you like my rabbit imitation?
I love snow.
Here I am waiting for the panting mess my mommy.
And this business up above?
Is my mommy's new addiction mind expander.
It's called Angry Birds.
It makes silly noises.
My mommy had to take an Advil after playing so much.
Because her thumb was sore.
But you didn't hear that from me.
I don't know anything.
I'm a dog...so they tell me.
Okay.
It's time to go back home.
I think there may be a biscuit there.
And a fluffy place to lie down.
And I'm sure my mommy had enough exercise.
Plus, there are always Angry Birds to keep her occupied.
I think it will be okay if her office is open today.
It's a lot of work taking care of her...

Snow. Day.

This is a 30" flower pot!

My daughter has been home for a month.
All of our conversations continue to take place this way:

Google it! Such sage advice...
We actually talked live and in person during lunch.
And this?
All I did was ask a few questions about a babysitting gig.
And I got this person with an interesting dialogue...
Seriously.
It's a good thing I speak Tennessee.
Otherwise, she might think she is special.

Finally!

I ask any Aquarian out there, or anyone who knows one, to read this horoscope and tell me this is not the quintessential Water Bearer:

Aquarius - Jan. 10, 2011

You may feel idealistic today, Aquarius. This is fine, but make sure these ideals are rooted in reality or they may be nothing more than a pipe dream. Feel free to escape to another mindset, but make sure you can still discern what's real and what isn't. This is a formative time for you in which you realize that the conventional ways of doing things aren't working anymore. Spread the word.

I just love it when there is documentation out there that explains me to me...better than a therapist. What's yours say?

Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Planning Ahead....

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha. Nope.

You Should Be a Politician

Confident, assertive, and dedicated - you know what you want in life and how to get it.

Stubborn and opinionated, you can stand your ground... even if it's unpopular.

And while you have strong views, you never overwhelm people with your opinions.

A true charmer, you subtly influence people into seeing things your way.

You do best when you:

- Work according to your own rules

- Can change the world with what you do

You would also be a good lawyer or talk show host.

What if I don't want to grow up?

This-n-That Thursday

  • Baton Rouge
  • clean salt and pepper shakers
  • the sea's monumental indifference
  • avoiding people who make you feel guilty
  • the moment after the show ends and before the applause begins
  • footsteps on gravel
  • mermaids and sirens
  • prehistoric stones scattered across fields
  • making spiced apple rings
  • deep-rooted being
  • the alcoves of a room
  • the way to school
  • no-fault insurance
  • learning about our ancestors
Today's post borrowed from here. Because I felt like it. And I'm old and can do what I want. Sometimes.

116 Days Until May

Aquarius Horoscope
For The Week Starting January 3, 2011

Happy New Year!
- Start pondering about some realistic goals for yourself because they could be met within the next two years. It is your turn for a new home or business (or both?) within that time period.
A nice opportunity should be presented to you during the month of May. Significant months for you to watch this year are March and July when it is out with old and in with the new
I'll take this one. How's yours looking?

A New Year's Prayer

Gracious God, please give me
A few friends who understand me and remain my friends;
A work to do which has real value,
Without which the world would be poorer;
A mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail not be blazed;
An understanding heart;
A sense of humor;Time for quiet, silent meditation;
A feeling of the presence of God;
The patience to wait for the coming of these things,
With the wisdom to recognize them when they come. Amen.

These were the closing words we said at the New Year's Eve service where we wrote our concerns, fears, hurts on a piece of paper, and then released them in a burning bowl as we left. It is one of my favorite traditions at our church. Many share this feeling with me, and we all suppose we actually may be Druids. And that is okay with us....
May your year be filled with peace, prosperity and love.
