Monday Moosings

Dear Reader,

Mental Mama is busy getting her cardio out of the way this morning, so she asked us if we would like to bring you today's news moo's.  Bessie and I have decided to tell you all about this little health kick she's on.  It's for real, and as a result, the whole household is following along as well--whether they want to or not.  Mental Mama doesn't mess around. You can take that to the bank.

Anyway, among the changes that we have made in our diet, probably the biggest for us is that there is no more butter.  Well, there is, but we don't see much of it.  It's all about good oils here. We even dip our bread in olive oil instead of putting butter on it.  And you know what?  It's good!  Mental uses garlic and herbs, and sometimes she even buys flavored oil just for the  bread.  It's much better for our hearts, and we think our waistlines may be shrinking just a bit.
See...this one below is olive oil just for dipping the bread...you should see Augie and The Bird with this stuff.  They love it so much, that we were afraid we wouldn't even get a bite.  But we did.  Mental Mama made them share.  She's so good that way.  Mental Mama is a sweetie-pie. And she's so modest.  If she ever knew we were writing this stuff she would be so embarrassed.
Here is a quick peek in the fridge this morning.  Mental Mama loves to scramble egg whites with tomatoes and basil.  She eats this almost every day.  Also, see that pitcher?  It is filled with water and some lemon juice.  She drinks that stuff all day long.  Those cut veggies are the same story.  Any time someone opens the door, that's what they see, and they tend to eat that instead of junk.  She's pretty clever.  They don't even know what's going on.
Another big change for us is that they don't eat any white flour in this house.  They even have this whole wheat loaf sometimes with dinner instead of french bread.  This is what we eat when we dip into that heavenly olive oil concoction.  We hate to admit it, but it may even be better than butter.  I cannot believe I am telling you this, but it is that good.
And the no-white-flour business extends to their pasta as well.  They only have whole wheat.  They have been doing this for a long time apparently, because the kids eat it without any kind of sass, and any time Mama makes some changes, those teenagers whine and moan about it. Even if it is good for them. Kids today, I tell ya!  Anyway, Bessie and I have decided that we really like it as well.  It has a lot of fiber and more protein, so we feel full and udderly content for a long time after we eat.
I hear Mental talking about Dr. Oz all the time, and apparently he is the one who got her motivated and started on this renewed interest in healthy living. I also think she is doing these new things in increments because too much change would make everybody just throw up their hands and go have a big hot fudge sundae.  This way, we all get to feel a little bit better inside and out, and, I swear, Bessie's butt looks a little bit smaller to me.

Love, Fred

Well, nice to know Bessie's butt is getting smaller *g.

I love whole wheat pasta. So much more flavor. The flavored olive oil is good too. But I'd have a hard time giving up the sour dough bread for my panini cheese sandwiches. I wonder if I could bake whole wheat/grain sour dough bread...Off to Google...

Toast a slice of that bread and rub it with a piece of cut garlic. Now pile it high with diced tomato, add a few bits of red onion and drizzle the whole thing with olive oil. Add salt and cracked pepper. You've just made lunch. Yum!

I'm off to do my cardio before it gets to 97 degrees.

Wow, Mary, that little recipe sounds great! Hi, Laura. I'm up early trying to visit some blogs. It's taking way too long to download, however, so I have to quit. I have to force each pic, as well. I'll try to visit others after peak usage time is over. Gah!

I've cut out the cocktail corner as well, but broke down yesterday and had vodka tonics. It was a good day for a mandarin flavored vodka. You've inspired me to go take my walk early, so I'm off. And yes, I think blogging is making my butt big. Lots of b's in that last one.

How Moovelous, Lala! You've even got the cows away from that dastardly butter! Soon you'll be a mere shadow of your former self and Annie will be quite envious!

Maybe Annie should follow your lead. Maybe Annie doesn't WANT to! Maybe Annie should anyway.

Very healthy ideas. We all need to be more careful what we eat. You know the saying.....we are what we eat. I try but I still fail. I have been vegetarian for 7 plus months. My daughter who had brain cancer talked me into going vegetarian with her to better her health.

Asthmagirl detests carrot/celery sticks. Everything else sounds divine!

Glad to see the cows are getting a little healthier.

I caved last night and made sourdough biscuits. I should have just taped them to my behind and saved them the trip!

I love anything that's dipped into anything so this sounds like my kind of diet!

Your fridge looks so cheerful and healthy. With good, fruity olive oil, who needs butter?

So Fred likes it that Bessie's butt is smaller? :)

I love bread dipped in olive oil and spices. Mmm! No tomato, thank you very much. Your new lifestyle looks quite delicious. Thanks for teaching the bovines a healthy new way to live!

That hot fudge sundae sounds really good, though ...

{{{{Hi! I'm visiting from Mommy Pie...}}}

I started eating that way recently, too, and I've got to say, I like it BETTER than the old way of eating.

Also, have you dipped the bread in olive oil and balsamic vinegar (like all at once?). Mmmm.

Finally, I tried making whole-wheat, sugar-free oatmeal raisin cookies for the kids the other day...and they actually LIKED them. I think I'm on to something.

My week has been terrible.
I have gained .6 of a pond and I am very discouraged.
I thought that I had changed things for the better but it looks like I am going to have to do something different.
Hopefully next week I will have better results.

Mmmm.... Fred, we've made all those changes too, well maybe not the bread without butter because I love butter but at least the bread we're spreading it on now is whole wheat.

I am squinting really hard while I read this post. Just don't want to see healthy food too clearly!

Sounds like you are going good. I have not joined the band wagon yet, with company I feel inclined to fix good and fattening food. Shame on me, and then I eat the left overs. Good grief.

So good to catch up with my former houseguests! They ate like hogs here, so a little healthier diet certainly won't do them any harm! Good post MP!
