I am So Not Going to the Beach This Weekend...

On the heels of my latest issues:

The Westport Weston Health District today urged local beachgoers to be on the alert for swimmer’s itch, a harmless but annoying skin rash caused by microscopic parasites found in fresh and salt waters.

Swimmer’s itch, also known as cercarial dermatitis, generally occurs in late July or August, the District said in a news release. It is a regular summertime nuisance throughout Connecticut and does not prompt beach closings.

The blame for the itchy skin condition lies with the larval stage of certain worms, which are bird parasites, the District said.

The parasite’s eggs are released into water by water fowl droppings and eventually unsuspecting humans can become victims by swimming or wading in infected recreational waters.

Bumps, resembling mosquito bites, develop on the skin as the body fights off the parasite.

According to the Connecticut State Department of Public Health, symptoms of swimmer’s itch include a tingling sensation that may be felt when the parasite enters the skin.

A mild itching may occur within one to two hours after exposure and lasts for about an hour. A rash appears, 10 to 15 hours later, along with intense itching. The rash usually peaks in three to four days and disappears within a week.

Repeated exposure to the parasite may increase sensitivity and the chance of getting swimmer’s itch.

Fer real? When the kids were little we spent a lot of time at Melbourne Beach in Florida, where my inlaws had a condo. My Little Guy would come out of the water some days with this rash that looked horrid and we never could figure out what it was. Like tiny jellyfish stings all over. I'm not a big fan of the beach.

EWWWW is right! Along with grooooos, gag me and EEEK. Anything involving the words "parasite" and "entering the skin" in the same sentence? I'm outta there. Damn bird droppings anyway. Can't go to the beach because of it. And then there is my huge "quirk" about swimming pools; in that, I will not go in a "public" one cause we all know what people do in them. Especially if you've got a bunch of little kids in there. EWWWW! And then there is taking a bath. No thank you. I don't care what nice stuff you add to the water, you're still sitting there in your own...

I'm sorry. Can you tell this all freaks me out a little? Just don't go ANYWHERE NEAR that beach; you could find out later those little cooties are jumpers :)!

I grew up living at the beach on the west coast. I always loved to waddle into the ocean to get rid of rashes. Seems the salt water did wonders in healing any booboos too. But if the powers that be say no, to Connecticut beaches, then I say, go to Rhode Island. Or maybe they want the beach all to themselves, you know, like when it gets too crowded in the water so someone yells "shark", then they can frolic in the surf without getting kicked in the ribs.

I don't understand why the Public Health would not close the beaches.
This can not be good for anyone.

Larva, parasites and an itchy rash? An infestation in your waters?

There is only one possible response and that is EEEEEEWWWWWWW.

I hope it clears up soon and pray to God it doesn't make its way down the coast to these waters. That's all I need.

I swam in a lake that had that once. The non technical name being used was "the screamin' itchies". It's to be avoided...

...Okay, okay, am I the only one here who is grateful that it isn't HUMAN droppings? Hello? lol... ;o)

...Seriously tho', that is a tad past disgusting but it doesn't blow the Gross-O-Meter out of the water, unless of course your MPM, as I'm sure she is scratching already at just the mere thought of all of this...lol... :o)

...Either way, a visit to the pool is in order here. Enjoy your weekend!

...Blessings... :o)

Ewwwww... As if there isn't already enough crap out there for us to be on the lookout for. I think your decision to not go in the water is a very wise one indeed.

Worms under my skin making me itch??? No freaking way! It just sounds insane... Mosquito bites can already send me over the edge of insanity. I'd go stark raving mad if I had WORMS under my skin.

Again... Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

I am saying EW all the way from here in Pennsylvania. We had several cases reported in Maryland, Ocean City, to be exact, a couple of years ago. Yuk.

That sounds pretty nasty. In our area the water occasionally gets a wicked algae but only on certain beaches and we get a warning to stay out of the ocean as well. Makes me feel creepy when I let the ocean water touch my bare feet at any time so I force myself not to think about it.

ok, I'll quit complaining about our little kiddie pool and just be glad my kids are just passing "family" germs around. Ewwww.

Worms? Parasites in water, that's awful. I can't handle that. That's real bad, Mental P Mama. I would stay far away.
