The Bird has a dinner party:

And then? Just another round of our typical chatter. We go from her political leanings, which she shared with me while the backside of Irene was howling through my ears, to what we're going to wear to a wedding in a few weeks. Now she wants Dora to have a Twitter account. Dora--who can barely get on her Facebook page....

And the Boy Child? Hurricane discussion turns to Dora with him as well. Don't you like how autocorrect turns surge into suede? I know lots of homeowners along the shore who wish that were actually true.

Seriously. All he cares about is Dora. I'm live texting a hurricane, and all I get is Dora/Doobie?

Dora. Dora Dora.

I get no respect.

What a week this is turning out to be:

• Said "hello" to my daughter and then "goodbye" 5 hours later.
• Both children depart for school the same day.
• Experienced a bad case of the empty nest blues on Monday.
• Son resumes school-year selective texting-answers-to-mom technique.
• Survived the Earthquake of August 23!
• Ridiculed by Virginia-based daughter for all the "earthquake drama."
• Empty nest blues miraculously lift.
• Attention turns to Hurricane Irene and this "cone of uncertainty" business.
• Have begun to lay in supplies: Pre washed salad, avocado, wine, cottage cheese, vodka, broccoli, olives, tweezers.
• Thinking about maybe getting some batteries and water, but is afraid of being accused of exhibiting signs of "hurricane drama" and setting self up for more ridicule.
• How're things by you?

They leave for their respective schools to begin their third(!) year.
