Sanford & Son, and Mama

Here at the Mental homestead, we recently had much debate and parental input, and weeping and gnashing of teeth, but in the end, Augie took his birthday money and some of his summer earnings and bought new tires, or wheels, or rims, or something.
Aren't they cool?  I think they are supposed to be cool.
His old tires, rims, wheels, or something?
Neatly tucked "behind" a maple in the back yard.
Or not so tucked.  They are all I see out my office window.
He claims he is selling them.
I am not holding my breath.

Well, to be fair, I have some back yard issues, too.
But this was an act of nature.
Strong winds blew this antique urn over.
I promise.  Ask Squazz.

Notice how I am just letting the leaves gather around it to give it that seasonal look.
Maybe I should put a cornucopia out there next to the arrangement....
So creative this ol' mama.

The apple really doesn't fall so far from the tree after all.
Please help me feel better.  Show me your back yard secrets.
Please?

While I do not have a picture handy, let me paint one for you:

5 outdoor cats. 5 food bowls littering the patio. 3 empty cans of cat food someone decided needed to litter the back yard. 1 cardboard box that at one point was being ripped up for a fire but then was cast aside. 3 flower beds loaded with crab grass and other assorted weeds that are strangling the last living shreds of roses. An old swing set that should have been moved when my daughter turned 8 but has been sitting there for 2 years waiting to be moved. The slide, which is not-so-nicely "tucked" next to the house, is broken off. Glance to your right and there is a dock with boards coming off of it. A boathouse, tin roof, rusted, with part of the roof missing. A sinking boat encrusted with barnacles and a moldy interior due to aforementioned water/sinking. A shoreline where the weeds have grown up to my shoulders.

I have to stop now since I have to drive 50 miles to work one way and I'd like to get my crying over with before I report in to the office.

Thank you.

Soon, the snow will cover the yard and all of your troubles will be hiden, until spring of course. No drapes to pull across the window to your office? Out of sight...out of mind! tehe

Not having a camera handy to take photos (my husband feels the need to keep it in his office), I will tell you that you are not alone.

Let's see, our back yard consists of a pool, a large shed, and landscaping that is primarily stone - my husband's idea to keep down on mowing and grass in the pool. Of course, this means that all the leaves sit on stone and the only viable way to clean them up is by either blowing them or vacuuming them, neither of which he wants to do. Oh, did I mention that we have several trees and shrubs that lose their leaves?

lol go visit my world its pretty much all in the yard... did I mention that Cory has two sets of tires and wheels for the truck... big fat ones to play in the mud with and normal ones for regular driving... he is a one man pit crew...last night the discussion on the truck was pretty much tha tthe tires and wheels are worth more than the entire truck... I have my neighbour's enormous ladder lying along the fence in my back yard since March, when he used it to get on my roof to check for damage done by our raccoon invasion. We live in a townhouse and it was easier for him to just leave it there until he needs it again, than to lift it back over the fence.

We haven't turned over the weedy gardens yet. It's a mess. And Patches keeps eating the pumpkin which didn't quite make it to the compost pile.

wouldn't he qualify as a stray if he still refuses to make nicey with anyone but me and then only at times?? stinker cut the crap out of the palm of my hand two days ago...the boy and man threatened to shoot him because he hurt the mama... stupid cat...I tried to defend the cat cause he really has no idea how to be a pet and is having a hard time learning some things... he is pretty easily redirected however... unlike the kids... blah... Ohhh no we have about 16 old tires all about you keep your set... we are working on ridding of the excess baggage and those are HARD to get rid of...thank you however for the sweet offer :D giggles!

Stella is my big back yard secret. Her new favorite thing to do is to go tearing out of the house after squirrels. Unfortunately (for the squirrel, at least) she's been successful twice. We've now resorted to going out first and then letting her out. (sigh)

really. dance around the tires and keep photographing the toppled stand because this is soooo much nicer than I could show you. Ever let a herd of boys loose in a yard?

Two outdoor cats, The Brute Squad and all the neighborhood cats= watch where you step. Add the half landscaped terrace... oh, and the neighbors that shower our upper terrace with used diapers, syringes, potato chip bags and porn DVDs and I'll take Augie's tires any day of the week!

I don't have a picture of my back garden at the moment and it's probably a GOOD thing! We have 25 or so huge trees out there...maples and a couple of oaks and lots of pine trees too.

And um, we STILL haven't gotten around to raking all the leaves. Uhg. And there's some deadfall scattered all over the place from a recent windstorm. But I'm tempted to leave it out there because Casey, our Goldendoodle, loves running at top speed through the back garden and hurling himself over the deadfall. Sometimes I think he thinks he's a horse!

The fence needs to be whitewashed, but that's going to be put off until next summer because it's already too blasted cold to undertake that.

There is a volley ball net that was hastily strung between two trees by my 18 year old daughter that is sagging, almost to the ground.

The sand box next to the swing is filled with weeds and branches. And why is there a pair of my BBQ tongs sticking up in the middle of the sandbox? So that's where they went.

There is a deflated ball of some sort in the corner of the deck next to a huge birdfeeder that was filled but never hung up and now acts as a makeshift fast food joint for the millions of chipmunks and squirrels that romp through our back garden.

Soon enough blankets of deep icy snow will cover all of this and it won't look so bad and I can forget about it for a few months.

They are pretty--good choice and that comes from the wife of someone who knows about these things.

I have dog poop in my backyard. Lots of it. Feel better?

The broken urn is actually kind of pretty in an antique architecture sorta way. The tires. Gah. The rims - sorry, even worse, I seem to have an automatic aversion to them.

My backyard secret - a rug that I put on the back patio underneath the patio furniture... I shook it out at the end of September and hung it on the fence Harley Guy built so it could air out before I rolled it up and put it inside for the winter.

It's still there.

Did he buy spinners? I hope so!!

My backyard secret? Privacy fence on one side which the kids and I look through to spy on the neighbors.

Do you know that last year, when the leaves fell from the trees, I thought "How pretty. How festive. How seasonal!"

And I let them be - did not rake them even once, and as a result, looked at a brown backyard for months.

In March or April - that's right, in the SPRING - when The Fiance raked them all up, I was like, Whoa! Look at all that green.

I'm a very lazy yard person.

Thanks for you comment on my Obama post. How did you find me? I took pics of my backyard after having a 6-month-old lab puppy for 6 weeks, but don't know how to put them in a comment. Maybe I'll do a post.
Drop by again sometime!

Oh no! Not tires! Hubby bought new tires and wheels for his car and then the old ones (which were pretty much brand new, by the way) sat in our garage. And sat. And sat. To be fair, he was trying to sell them. I think I even asked the people who read my blog if they wanted to buy them. FINALLY he sold them! YEAH! But, it was a LONG, LONG wait!

My yard would definately make you feel better about yours...mine is just nasty...but in 120 degree heat it is hard to keep much alive...let alone me, unless you are a lizard or a snake or a cactus. I am sorry about your urn...that would make me sick.

I don't know if you remember or not, but back when I was writing about our resident Fox, you'd commented on the interesting statue in our backyard. The funny thing is that it USED to be a statue of St. Fancis feeding the birds. Then, one day the winds blew it over. If it had blown in any other direction it would still be St. Francis. Unfortunately, it blew toward the sidewalk & busted into three pieces. The middle part was way too heavy to lift, so I just propped the head on the bottom part of his body. Now, it's just a weird *thing*. That is how it remains to this day since hubby won't buy me a new one.

Those leaves that are blanketing my ENTIRE yard...if I just ignore them, will they go away??

Is it unusual for people to have tires stacked in their backyards? NOT where I live!!! In fact, in this county, it's a source of pride....."He who has the most CRAP in his yard WINS"!!!

my back yard looks pretty good, so i can't join in. barren, mostly right now...ha. but, good luck with selling of the tires....

Lots of leaves and lots of leaves. Oh and you can't see it yet but something dead somewhere. But you can smell it.

Egghead said...

Oh and those tires? I once had a neighbor that had a stack of tires like that in his back yard. He grew potatoes in them. It started out with one and as the plant grew he added another tire and more dirt around the plant and son on until he had six high. Then at the end of the summer he took the tires off and the whole thing was full of potatoes from top to bottom. Now that was fun to see.
